John 21:24-25 - The End — Aneel Aranha

Hello and welcome to the Bite-Sized Gospel. Today, we will reflect on John 21:24-25, the closing verses of this Gospel. Listen.

This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

These final verses of John's Gospel serve as a powerful conclusion, affirming the validity of the account and hinting at the vastness of Jesus' ministry. The author, traditionally believed to be John the Apostle, identifies himself as the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. This personal attestation lends authenticity to the narrative, assuring readers that this is an eyewitness account.

The statement "We know that his testimony is true" suggests a community affirmation. It's not just the author claiming truthfulness, but a broader group vouching for the reliability of his account. This communal verification adds weight to the Gospel's credibility.

The final verse is particularly striking. It acknowledges that the Gospel doesn't contain an exhaustive account of Jesus' life and ministry. Instead, it's a carefully curated selection of events and teachings. The hyperbole about the world not having room for all the books that could be written about Jesus serves to emphasize the incredible impact and scope of Jesus' life and work.

This passage teaches us several important lessons. It reminds us of the value of eyewitness testimony in understanding the life of Jesus. It also highlights the importance of community in affirming and preserving the truth of the Gospel message. Furthermore, it encourages us to recognize that there is always more to learn about Jesus, that our understanding of him can continually deepen and expand.

As we reflect on these closing verses, let's ask ourselves: Do we approach the Gospels as reliable eyewitness accounts? How does our faith community support and affirm our understanding of Jesus? Are we continually seeking to know more about Jesus, recognizing that there's always more to discover?

May we, like John, be faithful witnesses to what we have seen and experienced of Jesus. May we value the testimony of those who walked with him. And may we never cease to be amazed by the depth and breadth of Jesus' life and ministry, always eager to learn more.
