Day 139 – A Heart Fully Committed

Starting strong and finishing strong are not the same thing. Asa learned that the hard way. Early on, he hears that God is with those who are with Him, and he renews his covenant with the Lord. It's a beautiful beginning. But later in life, he leans on a foreign king instead of on God, and he even throws the prophet who corrects him into prison. Over in 1 Kings 16, we meet a string of kings whose hearts keep drifting further from God, each one worse than the last. Then comes Philemon, and the mood changes completely. Here grace produces a heart that's fully committed, as Paul asks Philemon to welcome back a runaway slave, no longer as a slave but as a dear brother. Seen as a whole, these readings ask one searching question. Is your heart still wholly God's, all the way to the end?

Underneath it all lies a single truth. God is looking for hearts that stay fully committed to Him, not just lives that begin well.

What might this look like in your day? Three steps to walk it out.

First, take an honest look at your heart. Where has it quietly drifted from God? Pick one of those areas and bring it back to Him in prayer right now.

Second, renew a specific commitment to God, the way Asa once led his people to do. Say it out loud. Tell Him plainly what you're choosing to give back to Him today.

Third, take one real step toward making peace with someone. Let grace soften how you treat them, just as Paul urged Philemon to do.

Wherever today takes you, hold onto this. God strengthens the heart that stays fully His. His eyes are searching the whole earth for people like that. So don't just start well. Finish well.
