Day 144 – Pick Up the Mantle

Some moments ask us to take up what God is placing in our hands and simply move forward. Elijah is swept up to heaven in a whirlwind, and his cloak falls to the ground. Elisha picks it up, strikes the water of the Jordan, and steps into a calling that is now his own. Later, by the Sea of Galilee, a few fishermen hear three short words from Jesus. Come, follow me. They leave their nets right where they are, and a whole new life begins. Even Jesus, fresh out of the wilderness where He turned down every shortcut, takes up His mission with the same anchor over and over: it is written. And Psalm 48 tells us why we can follow without fear. This God, our refuge and our fortress, is our God for ever and ever. The call comes. The only question is whether we'll pick it up.

At the heart of these chapters is a simple idea. God invites you to take up the work and the calling He sets in front of you, and to follow Him without holding back.

What might this look like in your day? Let's take three steps.

First, think of one responsibility or calling you've been hesitating to pick up. Don't wait to feel ready. Take one small, concrete step toward it today.

Second, follow Elisha's example and ask boldly. He asked for a double portion of God's Spirit. You can ask God for exactly what you need to do the work He's given you.

Third, choose one verse and commit it to memory, so you can answer temptation the way Jesus did, with it is written ready on your lips.

Let this stay with you today. God rarely waits for us to feel ready before He invites us to follow. He isn't looking for people who have it all figured out. He's looking for people willing to pick up what He hands them and take the next step.
