Sometimes God guards his promises in the most hidden places. Today's readings trace that quiet faithfulness through danger. In 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22, ruthless Athaliah slaughters the royal family to seize the throne. But one infant, Joash, is secretly carried away and hidden in the temple for six long years. The whole line of David hangs by that single hidden thread. Psalm 131 then shows us the posture that survives seasons like this. A soul stilled and quieted, like a weaned child resting against its mother, no longer striving or grasping. And in Matthew 8, when a storm threatens to swallow the disciples, Jesus stands up and speaks, and the wind and waves fall silent at his word. Held together, today's passages call us to trust that whether the danger is a usurper, an inner storm, or a real one on the water, the same God is quietly keeping what he promised to keep.
Underneath it all lies a single truth. Even in seasons of darkness and danger, God is faithfully protecting his purposes, often in ways we cannot yet see.
So where does this leave us today? Here are three steps to walk it out.
First, take a few minutes of deliberate silence. Set down your striving and simply rest before God, like that weaned child in Psalm 131. You don't have to fix anything in those minutes. Just be still and be his.
Second, bring to mind one situation that feels dark or uncertain right now. Picture it clearly. Then say to yourself, quietly and on purpose, that God is still at work in it, even where you can't trace his hand.
Third, speak Jesus' calm into one anxious corner of your life. Choose trust over the urge to control everything yourself. Let his "Peace, be still" settle the storm inside you.
Let this stay with you today. God is at work in the dark long before you see the light. What feels hidden and hopeless is often exactly where he is keeping his promise.
