Day 149 – A Faith of Your Own

A borrowed faith can only carry us so far. Today's readings show us why. In 2 Chronicles 24 and 2 Kings 12, King Joash does what is right for as long as the priest Jehoiada is alive. He even restores the temple. But when his mentor dies, his devotion dies with him, and he ends up shedding the blood of Jehoiada's own son. His religion had been real, but it was never truly his own. Psalm 50 speaks straight into that. God says he doesn't want our bulls and goats. He wants thankful hearts and honest lives. Then in Matthew 9, Jesus calls Matthew the tax collector and sits down to eat with sinners. When the offended grumble, he answers with words that cut to the center of it all. "I desire mercy, not sacrifice." Seen as a whole, these readings reveal that God has never been impressed by ritual that leaves the heart untouched.
What connects these readings is this. God wants a living, personal faith, rooted in mercy and a thankful heart. Not a faith borrowed from someone else, and not one reduced to routine.
What does this look like once the day begins? Let me give you three steps.
First, ask yourself honestly whether your faith has been leaning on someone else's. A parent, a pastor, a friend. Then take one belief you've mostly inherited, and bring it directly to God today to make it your own.
Second, offer God a thank offering. Bring to mind three specific things you're grateful for, and pray each one back to him by name. Let gratitude be your worship.
Third, show mercy to one person today in a way they can actually feel. Let compassion drive it, not duty. A kind word, a second chance, a hand where it's needed.
Before the day gets busy, remember this. Faith that leans only on others cannot stand when they are gone. So make yours your own, grounded in a real relationship with God himself.
