Day 176 – Being Right and Being Helpful

2 Chronicles 29–31
1 Corinthians 8

You can be completely right and still leave someone worse off. Today's readings sit with that. In 2 Chronicles 29, Hezekiah becomes king and opens the doors of the temple in his very first month. Rubbish is carried out of the holy place. Priests who had settled into doing nothing are called back to work. Then comes the Passover, and a problem. Crowds arrive unprepared and ceremonially unclean, and Hezekiah could send them home. Instead he prays that the LORD, who is good, would pardon everyone who sets their heart on seeking God, even if they aren't clean according to the rules of the sanctuary. And the LORD heard Hezekiah and healed the people. Chapter 31 shows what followed, gifts piled up in heaps, with plenty to spare. Paul stands in a similar place in 1 Corinthians 8. Some believers in Corinth knew that an idol is nothing at all in the world, and they were right. Paul answers their correct knowledge with one sentence that reorders everything. Knowledge puffs up while love builds up. Read side by side, these chapters show that being right is only where the question starts.

At the heart of these chapters is a simple idea. God welcomes the heart that's genuinely seeking Him, even when it arrives unprepared. Which means the people who know the most carry the most responsibility for making room.

So how do we live this out today? Here are three steps from the readings.

First, name one thing in your life that's been shut for a long time. A practice, a relationship, a room in your heart. Take one small repair step today. Don't try to plan the whole restoration.

Second, think of one believer whose faith looks messier than yours. Today, correct nothing. Do one thing that makes it easier for them to keep coming back.

Third, give something this week beyond your normal pattern. Let the amount be decided by what would actually help someone, not by what you can comfortably spare.

As you step into your day, carry this with you. Being right is not the same as being helpful. Let love decide what your knowledge does next.

Thank you for joining me today. May God give you an open door, a gentle tongue, and room in your heart for people still finding their way. Until tomorrow, let what you know be shaped by how you love.
