Day 179 – What the Extra Years Are For

We pray hardest for the thing we forget fastest. Hezekiah is told to put his house in order, because he's going to die and will not recover. He turns his face to the wall and weeps bitterly. God answers before Isaiah has even left the middle court. I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life. The song Hezekiah writes afterward is remarkably honest. He describes his house being pulled down like a shepherd's tent, and then says it was for my benefit that I suffered such anguish. Then chapter 39 arrives, and the man who prayed so well handles his good years badly. Envoys come from Babylon, and he proudly shows them everything he owns. When Isaiah tells him it will all be carried off one day, Hezekiah says the word of the LORD is good, while privately thinking there will be peace and security in my lifetime. And right at that low point, Isaiah 40 opens with comfort, comfort my people. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever. Psalm 68 adds that He daily bears our burdens. Paul hands the church a meal built for exactly this weakness. Do this in remembrance of me. Seen as a whole, these readings reveal what answered prayer is actually for.

These passages point us to one clear lesson. Answered prayer is the start of a stewardship, not the end of a story. And the only memory strong enough to hold us is the word of a God who outlasts grass.

How do we carry this into today?

First, bring to mind one specific rescue God has given you, and roughly when it happened. Say it out loud to yourself. Hezekiah's failure began at the point where his memory stopped.

Second, this week, tell one younger person a true account of God's faithfulness in your life. Not advice. Not a lesson. Just what happened.

Third, before your next meal, take one minute to examine yourself the way Paul describes. Name honestly the one thing you've been carrying to the table unaddressed.

Let this stay with you today. Rescue is a beginning, not a reward. So spend today as time you were given, not time you're owed.
