Day 180 – Named, Chosen, and Placed

Isaiah 41–44
1 Corinthians 12

Most of us are still applying for a position we've already been given. Isaiah 41 through 44 keeps circling one idea from different directions. God takes the initiative, and He takes it personally. Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. Then the picture gets even more intimate. He is the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand. Chapter 42 describes a servant so careful that a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. Chapter 43 gets specific about identity. I have summoned you by name; you are mine. And then a promise that God isn't finished with anyone. See, I am doing a new thing. Against all of that, chapter 44 sets one of the sharpest pictures in Scripture. A man cuts down a tree, burns half of it for warmth, then carves a god from what's left and says to it, save me, you are my god. He made it with his own hands, and now he's asking it for help. Paul draws the same contrast in 1 Corinthians 12 without mentioning idols once. God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be. Together, these passages remind us that our place comes from God, not from us.

What connects these readings is this. The God who summons people by name and places them exactly where He wants them is the direct opposite of an idol we build ourselves and then ask to hold us up.

So where does this leave us today?

First, name the part of the body you've decided you're not. Then, instead of comparing yourself again, ask one person who knows you well what they actually see God doing through you.

Second, find the person nearest you who's smoldering rather than burning. Do the small thing today that keeps the wick lit. Don't wait for the big gesture that would impress.

Third, take an honest look at what you've built with your own hands and then started asking to save you. An income, a plan, a body, a reputation. Hand one of them back to God out loud today.

As you go through your day, remember that God assigns places. He doesn't hold auditions. So stop auditioning for one He's already given you.

Thank you for joining me today. May God give you a settled heart, a gentle hand with the weary, and confidence in the place He's put you. Until tomorrow, remain faithful in the small things and trust God with the rest.
