Day 188 – What Outlasts Nineveh

Jonah went to Nineveh and the whole city repented. About a hundred and fifty years later, Nahum goes to the same city, and this time there's no call to repent at all. Only the announcement that it's over. In between, Assyria had gone back to being Assyria. Deporting nations, terrorizing prisoners, swallowing the northern kingdom of Israel whole. Nahum calls it the city of blood, full of lies, never without victims. But the line to carry with you sits in the middle of chapter 1. The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble, and he cares for those who trust in him. That sentence appears inside a judgment oracle, which is exactly where it belongs. The same power that takes an empire apart is the power sheltering the people that empire was crushing. Psalm 149 says the Lord takes delight in his people and crowns the humble with victory. Nobody in 612 BC would have ranked the odds that way. And Paul gives us the picture that holds it all. We have this treasure in jars of clay, so the surpassing power is clearly God's and not ours. Hard pressed, but not crushed. Wasting away outwardly, renewed inwardly day by day. Seen as a whole, these readings reveal what actually lasts and what only looks like it will.

Underneath it all lies a single truth. Empires that look permanent aren't, and people who look fragile are, because the power holding the clay jar together belongs to God and not to the jar.

What might this look like in your day?

First, name the thing that's intimidating you right now. The diagnosis, the restructure at work, the person who holds power over your situation. Set Nineveh beside it on purpose and ask what it will look like in twenty years.

Second, do one thing today that only makes sense if the unseen world is real. Forgive a debt you could collect. Give an amount you'll actually feel. Keep a promise no one is checking on.

Third, find someone who looks worn down and tell them the cracks in a clay jar are how the light gets out. Be specific. Tell them what you've actually seen God do through their weakness, not just a general word of encouragement.

Before the day gets busy, remember this. The jar is fragile. The treasure inside it is not. You aren't holding yourself together, and you were never meant to.
