Day 192 – Stirred From the Dregs

Zephaniah
Psalm 74
2 Corinthians 8

Most of us have a half-finished project somewhere. A book on the nightstand with a bookmark in chapter three. A phone call we meant to make last spring. Nothing dramatic. We just stopped. Zephaniah has a picture for that. He describes people who are like wine left on its dregs. Leave wine too long on its sediment and it goes thick and flat. That's what happened in Jerusalem. The people didn't deny God. They just assumed he was idle. The Lord will do nothing, they said, either good or bad. Zephaniah calls them to seek the Lord, seek righteousness, and seek humility. Then he shows how far from idle God really is. God takes great delight in his people and rejoices over them with singing. Psalm 74 is the opposite of flat. From the rubble of a burned sanctuary, the psalmist pleads with God to rise up. And Paul writes to the Corinthians, who were eager to give a year earlier but let it settle. Now finish the work, he tells them. Read side by side, these chapters show that indifference often looks like good intentions left on the dregs.

At the heart of these chapters is a simple idea. God is never indifferent toward us. He delights in us and sings over us. That truth exposes the quiet complacency that assumes he'll do nothing, and so leaves us doing nothing too.

How can we put that into practice today? A God who is never idle calls us to finish what we once began with eagerness. Here's how to start.

First, think of one good thing you started with real enthusiasm and then quietly set down. Maybe a pledge, a reconciliation, or a promise to pray for someone. Take the next small step on it today. Finish the work.

Second, read Zephaniah 3:17 out loud, slowly, and put your own name at the start. Let yourself hear that God takes delight in you and sings over you. Let that, not guilt, be what moves you today.

Third, give one gift today that stretches you a little. It could be money, time, or your full attention. But before you give it, do what the Macedonians did. Give yourself to the Lord first, and then give to others.

Before the day gets busy, remember this. A God who sings over you deserves far more than a shrug.

Thank you for joining me today. May God stir your heart, renew your eagerness, and let you hear his song over your life. Until tomorrow, finish well what you began in faith.
