Day 215 – Whitewash or Healing

Ezekiel 13–15
Psalm 136
John 5

A fresh coat of paint can make a cracked wall look brand new. But it can't hold the wall up. In Ezekiel 13, God confronts false prophets who tell people only what they want to hear. They say "Peace" when there is no peace. When someone builds a flimsy wall, they cover it with whitewash so it looks solid. God warns that the storm is coming, and that wall will fall. In chapter 14, the elders sit before Ezekiel waiting for a word from God. But God says they've set up idols in their hearts. Chapter 15 even asks whether a vine's wood is good enough to make a simple peg. Psalm 136 answers all this with one line, repeated in every verse. His love endures forever. He remembered us in our low estate. Then in John 5, Jesus meets a man who's been unable to walk for thirty-eight years. He asks him a direct question. "Do you want to get well?" The man offers an excuse, and Jesus heals him anyway. Meanwhile, the religious leaders are more upset about a mat being carried on the Sabbath than happy that a man can walk. Taken together, these readings point to a simple contrast. Whitewash only makes us look better. Jesus makes us well.

These passages point us to one clear lesson. God won't cover over what He wants to heal. And because His love endures forever, it's safe to face the truth about ourselves and come to Jesus for real life.

So how do we put this into action? Here are three steps.

First, hear Jesus asking you today, "Do you want to get well?" Think of one area of your life. Maybe a habit, an old wound, or a broken relationship. Answer Him honestly in prayer, with no excuses.

Second, the false prophets told comforting lies. Today, when someone asks for your opinion, resist the urge to say only what they want to hear. Tell them the truth, gently and with love.

Third, Psalm 136 repeats its refrain until it sinks in. Tonight, read it aloud with a family member or friend. One of you reads each line, and the other answers, "His love endures forever." Then add a few lines of your own about how God has been faithful to you this year.

And as you go, keep this close. Whitewash hides the cracks, but only Jesus can heal them.

Thank you for joining me today. May God give you the courage to be honest, the grace to be healed, and the joy of knowing His love never runs out. Until tomorrow, choose what's real over what only looks good.
